The drama! Here you'll find books and videos that cover that long time fascination, death or survival against the odds on the high seas. Needless to say, the epic story of RMS Titanic is well covered below. However, we have found quite a few other gems for you as well.
If you like this kind of books - and we know you do! - you'll find more in the "Narrative" section. There, the emphasis is on the individual's battle for survival against the elements. In this section, we cover the major disasters on the high seas through history.
A Night to Remember
Published in 1955, this book was for many years the best account of the Titanic disaster. While later research has brought to light new facts and thus made the book unsuitable as "the one and only" on the subject, it is still one among the very best. And too cheap! Which is a very good reason to get the author's recently issued update: "Night Lives On".
Discovery of the Titanic: Exploring the Greatest of All Lost Ships
Updated (1998) version of one of the definitive "must reads" on Titanic. A first hand telling of the quest to find the sunken ship, but also a lot of information on how she ended up on the ocean floor. Beautiful pictures.
Down With the Old Canoe
The topic of this book is not the sinking of the Titanic, but rather how society reacted. The myth and the cult of the Titanic. Very interesting read for those deeply interested in the matter, not so if you are basically hooked on the drama. Also available in paperback.
James Cameron's Titanic
Featuring Jack, and Rose, and most of all, the Titanic... A love story like no other, reviewed to 5 solid stars (the max) by its readers. Also available in paperback.
Psalm at Journey's End
Quite a few novels have been set on the Titanic up through the years, but few if any are as well written and compelling as this one. A gem! Also available in paperback.
Story of the Titanic as Told by Its Survivors
The hauting tale of four of the survivors of the Titanic disaster. Very hard to put down, this one!
The Titanic: End of a Dream
This book reveals a number of facts not before known about the Titanic disaster. It also covers the aftermath very well. The book has received raving reviews, and deservedly so. Also available in paperback.
The Titanic: The Extraordinary Story of the "Unsinkable" Ship
Compassionately written, this is a very easy to read, yet well researched account of what happened to Titanic on that fateful last night in the North Atlantic.
Titanic at Two A.M.
An extraordinary piece of work! Focuses on the last 20 minutes before the RMS Titanic disappeared under the surface. Wonderfully different, with - among other illustrations - great paintings by the author.
Titanic: Destination Disaster
"The Legends and the Reality". Fact-filled, dispassionate, thorough. Few books give a better account of the events that transpired on the night of the Titanic disaster. Filled with photos.
Titanic: Fortune and Fate
Letters, mementos, and personal effects from those who sailed on the lost ship. Absolutely wonderful pictures which words cannot do justice. A beautiful and remarkable book.
Titanic Legacy: Disaster as Media Event and Myth
Very interesting and well written book dealing not so much with the events of the sinking, but rather the role played by the media, contemporary and in the years to follow.
Titanic: Safety; Speed, and Sacrifice
A thorough, fact-filled account of what really happened to Titanic on her maiden voyage - and why.
Titanic: Triumph and Tragedy
By many considered the best and most complete book on the Titanic. Beautifully illustrated.
Titanic Voices: Memories from the Fateful Voyage
A must! The author makes use of numerous sources and personal accounts to tell the story, while also shedding light on many issues not often emphasized by others. Beautifully illustrated. By its nature, it is fragmented, so don't choose it for your one and only book about the Titanic disaster. But put it right after "A Night to Remember" or "Unsinkable" on your reading list!
Unsinkable: The Full Story of RMS Titanic
Published in April 1998, this may very well become the new "Bible" on the Titanic disaster. No shocking new information, but an excellent account of just about everything known about what happened to the mighty liner, the unsinkable ship...
Other recommended shipwreck books
Eastland: Legacy of the Titanic
The definitive work on the sinking of Eastland in 1915. This, the worst disaster ever to happen on the Great Lakes, took place three years after the Titanic. Also available in paperback.
Great Lakes Shipwrecks & Survivals
The Great Lakes are indeed great, but they're not the Atlantic or the Pacific. Still, a surprising number of people have perished in disasters on the lakes. This is the best book on the subject.
Fitzgerald's Storm: The Wreck of Edmund Fitzgerald
Probably the best book available on this tragedy.
Lost Liners: From the Titanic to the Andrea Doria the Ocean Floor Reveals It's Greatest Ships
Though no other disaster can compete with the foundering of the RMS Titanic for fame (and it is well featured here also), she is far from the only liner lost to the sea. This remarkable book will take you through more than 100 years of maritime history. A beautiful book!
The Perfect Storm
The terrifying true story of a ship caught in the middle of the storm of the century - "perfect" in the sense that it could not possibly be worse. Also available in paperback.
The Wreck of Edmund Fitzgerald
Very well written book on the foundering of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

A Night to Remember: The Sinking of the Titanic
By many still considered the best Titanic movie ever.
The Poseidon Adventure
The mother of all fictional disaster movies...
You've all seen it - now own it, and see it again. And again... After all, it is the biggest movie the world has ever seen, in more sense than one.
